My trail guidebook promises that now follows what most JMT hikers consider the most monotonous part of the entire trail. Unfortunately it does not go into details about the reasons.

After crossing Deer Creek the trail continues to ascend slowly until it reaches the 10000 ft mark and then stays at about this elevation for a while. The area is forested, hence the views are rare.Continue Reading

Today a short and uneventful nothing-but-down day is ahead of us. We want to hike just a few miles down to Red’s Meadow resort and spend the night at the campground – and the restaurant.

Waking up to a nice sunrise in a barren landscape below Donohue Pass a decision is waiting to be made: Shall I stick with Kevin’s “slower” pace or should I carry on alone?

For the first four days on the John Muir Trail we have been hiking from one backpackers campground to another. Today will be the first day we’ll be camping in the “wilderness”, most likely also away from other people. Good!

After yesterday’s long day some short and easy hiking is very welcome. We only need to get over Cathedral Pass and then down to Tuolumne Meadows, which should be a matter of a couple of hours of nice walking.

Today the first major highlight of the trail awaits us: Half Dome! Actually it is not part of the John Muir Trail, but almost all JMT hikers do the small side trip.

After a warm night (9°C in the tent) and a short breakfast we get started at 7:50. Not as early as I’ve hoped, but still early enough to avoid all the day hikers that will summit Half Dome from the bottom of Yosemite Valley.Continue Reading

After yesterday’s nice warm-up hike I can officially start my John Muir Trail hike today.

Kevin and I take the bus from the Yosemite Lodge up to Glacier Point. At 25$ (one-way) it is not too cheap but this way we can avoid having to hike up to Glacier Point via the steep Four-Mile-Trail.

And the bus ride turns out to be an informative and very entertaining guided tour.Continue Reading

After arriving in Yosemite and setting up my tent in the backpackers campground, it is time for a first walk.
